5 Credit Bureau Repair Tips

The epidemic of home foreclosures, higher gas and food prices have stretchered the average consumers budget to the max. According to Trans Union and Equifax, national credit scores are steadily dropping at a higher rate than they have seen in the last decade. As a result of the lower credit scores large ticket items, like homes and automobiles, have began to slow down fueling the current recession. At Direct Banc, we thought a few credit bureau repair tips might be in order, here are the steps we recommend consumers follow.

Become Familiar with your Credit Report – Having a credit bureau in hand is essential if you are serious about credit bureau repair. There are three major credit reporting repositories (Experian, Equifax, Trans Union), each reporting their own version of your credit. It almost certain that each of their reports will differ from the others. For this reason, you should get a 3 in 1 credit bureau report before you begin your credit bureau repair. Validate all Negative remarks – We suggest that you send a validation letter to every creditor or collection agency that is reporting negative information about you. Send these letters BEFORE sending a dispute letter to the credit repositories. Creditors/collection agencies are required to validate the legitimacy of your debt and their relationship to the debt. If they are unable or unwilling to answer your request for validation, the credit repositories will likely remove the remark. Dispute Invalidated Items to the Credit Repositories – Wait 30 business days from the time sent the creditors a letter of validation. Once this time frame has passed, you can send a dispute letter to EVERY credit repository showing proof (certified letter receipt) that the collection agency failed to respond to your request. This will usually result in the removal of the remark. Stop the Collection Agencies from harassing you -Once you are back on the collection agency’s radar, they will most likely begin to actively collect the debt. We all know how annoying that is; all you need to do is send them a “stop harassment” letter that basically tells them to leave you alone while you are working on the debt. Dispute Valid Debts with The Credit Repositories – As we mentioned earlier, collection agencies have to prove that you owe the debt to the repositories. Even though you may actually owe the debt, or deserve the negative remark, some agencies are unable to back it up. If you send a dispute letter to ALL of the repositories requesting an investigation the collection agencies are compelled to answer them. If they do not answer the repository in a timely manner, or they offer unsatisfactory proof, the remark must be removed.

This list is just a partial explanation of how to thoroughly repair your credit bureau. Keep in mind when attempting credit bureau repair, the credit repositories are your friends, being rude or disrespectful to them will not help your situation. The collection agencies, not so much, it’s best to deal with them by mail. Remember to send ALL correspondence certified, return receipt mail; it’s worth the two bucks. Keep all receipts and letters, you WILL need them in the future when the collection agencies sell your debt to penny brokers.

Credit Repair Tips – How to Review and Clean Your Credit Report

Your credit score has a big impact on everyday financial situations such as: What interest rate you pay on a credit card, whether you can rent an apartment, whether you have to pay a deposit with your utility company, whether you can qualify for a home loan, and maybe even a potential employer’s decision to hire you. Going through life with bad credit can be very challenging.

Getting a Copy of Your Credit Report

You can’t fix bad credit without knowing what’s in your credit report first. You need to get a copy of your credit report from all 3 credit bureaus: Experian, Trans Union, and Equifax. You can request a copy of your own credit report for free once a year.

Reviewing Your Credit Report

It may not be fun, but reviewing your credit report line by line at least once a year is very important to identify any errors or issues that you may not be aware of. Pay special attention to “derogatory” (or negative) items such as late payments, collections, and charge-offs – they lower your credit score, sometimes significantly.

First, make sure your name, birth date, and current address are showing correctly on the report (in the “Personal Information” section). If not, make a note to correct them with the credit bureau(s). Make sure you check every account listed on your credit report:

Verify the account status is correct – you may discover old accounts you thought were closed that still show up as “open”. If you have accounts left open that you’re not aware of, they may be hurting your ability to apply for new credit or raise the credit limit on accounts you are using. Look at each account in detail (account number, credit limit, date opened etc.) and make sure it is really YOUR account. Someone else could have a similar name and their account might be mixed up with yours. Or worse, someone may be stealing your identity to open accounts in your name, leaving you with the unpaid bills. If you recently refinanced and/or paid off a mortgage or credit card account, check to make sure the account status (“paid, closed”) and current balance ($0) are reflected in the credit report. Note that there will be some delay (30-60 days) in updating your report.

Too many inquiries (requests for your credit history made by other people) can hurt your credit score. Review the “Inquiries” section in your credit report and make sure you know who asked for your credit file and why. You should either already have an account with the inquiring entity, or have authorized their credit check in some way (e.g. by applying for a new bank / credit card account or loan).

Understanding Your Rights

Remember, you have the legal right to know what’s in your credit file, and you have the right to dispute incomplete or inaccurate information. By law, the credit reporting agencies must correct or delete inaccurate, outdated, incomplete, or unverifiable information from your credit history, usually within 30 days.

Therefore, reviewing your credit report at least annually is critical to maintain the accuracy of your credit information. You can raise your credit score by disputing any errors or outdated negative information (more than 7 years old, or bankruptcies more than 10 years old).

Credit has become one of the most important things in our day to day life. Our credit report is in a way like a financial report card. All the finance companies we deal with on a daily basis such as the credit card companies, banks, lenders and store credit cards all report to the credit bureau on a monthly basis.

Here are a few of the things that will help better your credit. Be on time with your payments. Never miss a payment- even if you only pay the minimum amount that is ok. The important thing is to pay it. Try to pay credit cards in full as often as possible. Keep your accounts open, even if you are no longer using that particular credit card. Longevity is an important factor when it comes to good credit.

The longer an account is open, the better your score will be. Having said that, it is all these factors put together that play a role in having a good credit score. Information on your credit report can stay on there for up to ten years.

Unfortunately, not all of us have the best credit. There are two major credit bureau companies that operate in Canada, Equifax and Trans Union They score your credit according to their formulas to develop what is known as a Beacon Score

Beacon Scores usually range from 400 to 850; 400 being lowest score and 850 being the highest score. These credit ratings or Beacon Scores estimate the ability and willingness of a person to repay a debt or loan.

Repairing credit will take time and patience on your part. Having no credit is almost as bad as having bad credit. Most lenders do not approve people that have no credit history. This is because they do not want to take the risk. The good news is that you do not have bad credit. You just have to develop your credit.

Bad credit takes more time and effort to repair. The first step in repairing your credit is to get a credit report on yourself Once you obtain your credit report make sure the information on the report is in fact correct, such as your personal information, your payment history and the list of all your creditors.

Credit Cards to Rebuild Credit – 5 Methods to Get that Card

Study reveals that nearly 9 million people in America have problems of bad credit. This forms about 3% of the population, (over 6% of the adult population!) of the United States. So the knowing the credit history of a person is gaining ground and necessity for creditors.

The fact remains if your FICO rate is below 620, people won’t lend you any credit. This FICO score being low has various reasons like bankruptcy, excessive debts, inability of rendering payment of bills at proper time, among others.

However, there is a ray of hope! Your credit score can be improved. This can be done by maintaining your potential for credit,however small it may be and making it clear to creditors that you’re capable of paying your debts in time, without having to having to resort to more credit. To help you improve your credit there 5 basic steps below.

1. Get yourself a copy of the your credit report. Then utilize the various advantages of the credit report of the government (which is free) from every Bureau of the National Consumer Credit – Equifax and Trans-Union. This will get you to the start of the process. It will give you a clear picture of your present rating.

2. File an application for a credit line, which may be a secured or unsecured credit card.

3. On getting the card, do not make blind purchases. Restrict the purchases to 70 percent of limit imposed on the credit card. i.e. if the limit of the credit card is $500, use it to the extent of $350 only.

4. Then, make sure you pay pay bills at the proper time, as this alone takes up 35% of the FICO score of yours. So this is a good base for creditors to judge your creditworthiness.

5. So what about Prepaid cards?

You can also use a credit card that is prepaid. This often a solution that many borrowers are unaware of. This, is perhaps the simplest and most effective method for longer term improvement if you have debt discipline problems. This effectively means you will mean using a credit card to rebuild credit – a ‘win-win’ situation. Use a prepaid credit card that is reported to a Credit Bureau. Only a few of the credit cards regularly report to a credit bureau. So select one that does so, on a regular basis.

One thing to note about prepaid cards is that you must Keep a track of fees. The prepaid card companies often levy fees. Make a prior comparison with many companies in order to secure a credit card where the lowest fee is charged. Bear in mind that some fees need to be paid for credit cards that get reported to the credit bureau, which can be up to an annual fee of$100 – But remember the purpose of this card is to repair credit!



Check the benefits

Some prepaid cards are available with certain benefits, but not all of them. Some give you points which can be used for free call time and other activities.



Preventing abuse of the credit card

Prepaid cards have the distinct benefit that you can never cross the limit, so it enables you to avoid interest and penalties. The implication is that if a report to the credit bureau is made, it is literally impossible to get a FICO score which is lower than your current score with such a card. So you can get credit cards to rebuild credit. It only gets better!

Your credit report contains information about where you work, live and how you pay your bills (On time or not). It also may show whether you’ve been sued, arrested or have filed for bankruptcy with in the last 10 years. Companies called consumer reporting agencies (cra) or credit bureaus compile and sell your credit report to businesses all over the world.

Many financial advisors suggest that you periodically review your credit report for inaccuracies or omissions. This could be especially important if you’re considering making a major purchase, such as buying a home. Checking in advance on the accuracy of information in your credit file could speed the credit-granting process, clean credit is a must.

Because businesses use this information to evaluate your applications for credit, insurance, employment, and other purposes allowed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), it’s important that the information in your report is complete and accurate.

Whenever you apply for any type of credit or financing, a credit report is pulled from at least one of the three major credit bureaus. You want a clean credit report to be pulled. While there are hundreds of smaller credit bureaus around the country, virtually every credit bureau is affiliated with either Experian, Trans Union, or Equifax.

Getting Your Clean Credit Report

If you’ve been denied credit, insurance, or employment because of information supplied by a credit reporting agency, the FCRA says the company you applied to must give you the agency`s name, address, and telephone number. If you contact the agency for a copy of your report within 60 days of receiving a denial notice, the report is free. In addition, you’re entitled to one free copy of your report a year.

If you simply want a copy of your report, call each credit bureau listed since more than one agency may have a file on you, some with different information.

The three major national credit bureaus are:

Equifax, P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241; (800) 685-1111.

Experian (formerly TRW), P.O. Box 2002, Allen, TX 75013; (888) EXPERIAN (397-3742).

Trans Union, P.O. Box 1000, Chester, PA 19022; (800) 916-8800.

Correcting Errors For Clean Credit.

To protect all your rights under the law and to keep your credit clean contact both the CRA and the information provider.

First to get clean credit reports, tell the credit reporting agency in writing what information you believe is inaccurate. Include copies (please keep your originals) of documents that support your position. In addition to providing your complete name and address, your letter should clearly identify each item in your report you dispute, state the facts and explain why you dispute the information, and request deletion or correction. Always keep copies of your dispute letter.

They must reinvestigate the items in question, usually within 30 days, unless they consider your dispute frivolous. They also must forward all relevant data you provide about the dispute to the information provider. After the information provider receives notice of a dispute from the CRA, it must investigate, review all relevant information provided by the CRA, and report the results to the CRA. If the information provider finds the disputed information to be inaccurate, it must notify all nationwide CRAs so they can correct this information in your file. Disputed information that cannot be verified must be deleted from your file, then you will recieve a clean credit report, with that item removed.

If your report contains erroneous information, the CRA must correct it(clean credit).

If an item is incomplete, the CRA must complete it. For example, if your file showed that you were late making payments ( 30 days or more), but failed to show that you were no longer delinquent, the CRA must show that you’re current.

If your file shows an account that belongs only to another person, the CRA must delete it.

When the reinvestigation is complete, they must give you the written results and a free copy of your clean credit report, if the dispute results in a change. If an item is changed or removed, they cannot put the disputed information back in your file unless the information provider verifies its accuracy and completeness.

Also, if you request, they must send notices of clean credit report corrections to anyone who received your report in the past six months. Job applicants can have a corrected copy of their clean credit report sent to anyone who received a copy during the past two years for employment purposes. If a reinvestigation does not resolve your dispute, ask the CRA to include your statement of the dispute in your file and in future reports.

Second, in addition to writing to the credit agency, tell the creditor or other information provider in writing that you dispute an item. Again, include copies (please not originals) of documents that support your position. Many providers specify an address for disputes. If the provider then reports the item to any credit reporting angency, it must include a notice of your dispute. In addition, if you are correct that is, if the disputed information is not accurate the information provider may not use it again, thus you will have a clean credit report.

When negative information in your report is accurate, only the passage of time can assure its removal. Accurate negative information can generally stay on your report for 7 years.

Clean Credit: There are certain exceptions:

Bankruptcy information may be reported for 10 years.

Information about criminal convictions may be reported without any time limitation.

Credit information reported in response to an application for a job with a salary of more than $75,000 has no time limit.

Information about a lawsuit or an unpaid judgment against you can be reported for seven years or until the statute of limitations runs out, whichever is longer. Criminal convictions can be reported without any time limit.

Credit information reported because of an application for more than $150,000 worth of credit or life insurance has no time limit.

Adding clean credit accounts to your file:

Your credit file may not reflect all your clean credit accounts. Although most national department stores and all-purpose bank credit card accounts will be included in your file, not all creditors supply information: Some travel, entertainment, gasoline card companies, local retailers, and credit unions are among those creditors that don’t report clean credit.

If you’ve been told you were denied clean credit because of an insufficient credit file or no credit file and you have accounts with creditors that don’t appear in your credit file, ask the CRA to add this information to future reports. This will help get you on the road to a clean credit report. Although they are not required to do so, many CRAs will add verifiable accounts for a fee. You should, however, understand that if these creditors do not report to the CRA on a regular basis, these added items will not be updated in your file.
